Okay, this is very useful and if you haven't done this before, will help you soooo much.
and even better if your computer is getting old now, this is guaranteed to help.
start by clicking start, and typing in services.msc
(xp users, open up "run" and type the same thing)
now you will be looking at every process on your computer
heres what you can adjust
Alerter: only really needed if your on a network and receive alerts through the network
but generally speaking useless.
Application Management: set this to manual, reason being, its there to be used, but not all the time, so having it manual means it will start when it needs to
Automatic Updates pain in the ass if you ask me, update once a month if you have to, but for the rest of the month have it disabled, you can easily enable again.
Clipbook: another network related one, if your not on a network disable, or if unsure set to manual
Computer Browser once again, network related, if you don't need to monitor other comps over a network disable
Cryptographic Services:set this to manual, most people have no idea what it is
Error Reporting Service:bloody useless service, unless your one of those people who when a program crashes your report it to microsoft
Fast User Switching Compatibility: if your the only user, disable
Help and Support: set this to manual
HTTP SSL:again manual this one
Human Interface Device Access:only really needed if you use hot keys
Indexing Servicehell of alot of cpu use, disable or set to manual
IPSEC Servicesmanual
Windows Messengerthis does not, i repeat does not have anything to do with windows live messenger, disable it
Print Spooler:disable if you don't use a printer
Security Centerbloody annoying and eats your memory, disable
Serverif your not on a network disable, or set it to manual
i know thats not all of them, but if you have any to add, feel free to do so
